Study for a bust, 2017

Paper mache

The start of a series of busts which will represent children/teenagers who haven’t been able to form identities, due to the different pulls and influences of various social media. Kids are using technology and attempting to form identities online before they’ve even had a chance to work out who they are in the real world, entering social media while they’re still developing their sense of self. There may also be an element of deliberately being a blank, unformed person on social media as a defence against cyberbullies.

The outer layer of this paper mache bust is watercolour paper with black paint mixed in with the glue.
